Chapter Fourteen

Savannah couldn’t remember the last time she’d gotten to sit on the couch and watch an entire movie. At least not a movie that wasn’t for the under-five crowd.

She burrowed deeper into the Sherpa blanket that Judd had covered her with a few minutes ago and set the remote on the end table beside her hot tea and cough drops. He’d told her to pick a movie and he’d watch it with her. So naturally she’d gone straight for Sleepless in Seattle, which she’d paused during the opening credits so he wouldn’t miss anything.

Smiling, she listened to Judd and Wyatt in the bathroom. It was teeth brushing time, which as a mom, she’d always found daunting. Somehow it took close to twenty minutes every night. It was like stepping inside some kind of wormhole.

But Judd seemed to be handling it like a pro. She could hear him explaining the difference between flying jets, and flying prop planes. This, in between telling Wyatt to open wider, and rinse.

“Okay, wipe your mouth buddy,” he said.

“I want to ride bucking horses. But maybe I could fly planes, too.”

“I think you can do anything you want.”

“Anything?”

“Anything,” Judd said. “You be good to your mama, and study hard in school, and the sky’s the limit.”

“Would you teach me to fly a plane, Judd? When I get to be growed up?”

Someone turned off the faucet and it was quiet for a minute. Savannah waited, her chest tight. She swallowed, but barely registered the pain in her tonsils. It was her heart that seemed to be the most tender part of her right now.

“When you get to be grown up, I’ll teach you to fly, kiddo,” Judd said. “If you still want to fly, I’ll teach you.”

Savannah let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. She didn’t know what she’d expected him to say. That he might not be around when Wyatt was grown up? That he might just be a distant memory? Of course not. But the sweet way he answered touched her just the same.

After a few seconds, Judd appeared with Wyatt on his shoulders. He walked over and leaned down so Wyatt could wrap his little arms around her neck.

“Night, Mama. Judd doctored my lip.”

“Oh, good. Did it hurt?”

“Nope!”

As Judd straightened again, she caught his gaze. And there was something unspoken between them. Something she didn’t know if she could verbalize if she’d tried. Her heart swelled, even as she willed it not to. She saw visions of a family, a whole family, and she pushed them away again before they could take root.

“I’m gonna tuck this slugger in and I’ll be right back.” He turned to the TV and his lips tilted. “I see it’s going to be death by chick flick.”

She laughed, trying not to let it turn into a coughing fit. “You said any movie.”

“Damn. I did say that.”

He winked at her and walked out of the room leaving her ovaries aching along with every muscle in her body.
